Asbury UMC Historical Renovations & Structural Upgrades

The Asbury Church is a historic corner-stone of the Hill Community in Easton, MD, for both cultural and community events. This project was the cumulation of Historic Easton’s efforts to complete a full renovation of the first floor, replacing the floor framing system and deteriorating 2nd floor framing elements that had been compromised by moisture and previous renovations. The renovation included creating new bathrooms, a fellowship hall, a commercial kitchen, and a new mechanical room. New MEP systems were installed, including new electrical service and water service to the building.

The exterior scope involved installing lead-cames windows repaired by Asbury’s selected window restoration firm, repainting the exterior trim, replacing the 1st floor windows with historically-approved windows, repainting the original windows on the 2nd floor, and installing a new flat roof and access stair.

The exterior brick was in need of re-pointing, and Harper & Sons obtained a mortar analysis of the existing mortar, and get a custom pointing mortar match, for both color and compressive strength.

The most daunting challenge of this project was underpinning the leaning steeple in 6 phases! The steeple was underpinning with 20 helical piers reaching over 50’ below the existing foundation. The piers were capped with a concrete grade beam in phases. The final challenge was to install a new brick and granite step and railing to meet current code.
